Get mating right and you set your herd and your bottom line up for seasons to come. But staying on track isn’t easy when so many factors, from weather to feed, are out of your hands. That’s why having clear, real-time insights into what’s happening in your herd is critical - so you can act fast, reduce missed heats, and keep conception rates where they need to be.
Sourcing, and interacting with mating data from your herd will help you keep on top of your targets for the mating season. Activity monitoring systems such as Nedap’s cow monitoring technology, provides essential data in an easy-to-use way. Explore the range of insights below.
High submission rates early in the season are key to compact calving and enough replacements down the track. With many farms only using dairy semen in the first round, everything must be right to hit submission and conception targets. Tracking rates in real time lets you spot issues early and act fast.
How to track: Insemination Results Widget
Nedap’s advanced activity monitoring system lets you track insemination progress in real time. The Insemination Results Widget shows both the running total of cows served and the percentage of your herd mated as the season progresses. Hitting 100% quickly is the goal – lower rates can flag wider fertility issues that need attention.
Non-return rates give farmers an early indication of how mating is progressing, and what conception rates may be. Nedap's non-return rate is calculated as the percentage of cows that did not return with a heat within 25 days of being served.
Why to track: Non-Return Rates
Nedap’s non-return rates show how many cows haven’t cycled 25 days post-insemination, guiding semen decisions and helping spot issues early. High non-return rates may prompt a switch to beef or conventional semen sooner, while lower rates can justify sticking with dairy semen longer.
Seeing a cow hasn’t cycled is one thing, knowing why is another. Accessing her reproductive and health history reveals causes like tough calvings, breeding challenges, or metabolic stress, helping you take targeted action.
How to track: Reproductive Issues
Nedap’s Custom Worklists put all key mating data in one place, helping you spot patterns and act fast. Lists can show unserved cows alongside details like lactation number, days in milk, days since last heat, health info, and any flags you’ve set. This oversight highlights cows needing checks – like a 2-year-old unserved by week five – or those to monitor, giving you powerful, informed control over the season.

“Fertility is our most important KPI in a strict spring calving system. So, we have to be very hot on getting cows in calf, making sure they are cycling. We found Nedap extremely helpful for that.”
